Omega-3 Helps Newborn Brains To Develop

omega-3In a study carried out by the Adelaide University in Australia, it was found that a supplement of omega-3 fatty acids in maternal milk helped the mental development of premature babies and lowered the possibility of disorders arising.

It is known that babies who are born at 33 weeks of gestation cannot manufacture Docosahexaenoic acid, a type of omega-3 fatty acid produced in the brain; this will leave them vulnerable to brain malfunction and disorders related to the delayed development of the baby.

The research demonstrated that half of the babies given increased supplements of DHA, either through their mother’s milk or directly, did not show signs of delayed mental development in opposition to those who had low doses of DHA.

These results demonstrate that omega-3 fatty acids are very beneficial at many different levels, for our health.

Omega-3 fatty acids are also known to be effective for the correct development and conservation of neurological pathways and will encourage brain health; they can control blood clotting and can even prevent strokes or heart diseases.

The body does not in fact produce these acids; we must therefore integrate them into our daily diets, using natural sources that can be found in fish, tofu, nuts and soya beans, or with diet supplements found in health food stores.
