Warning For Parents: Rare Disease That Kills Child

haemophilus influenzae type bAccording to health officials of Minnesota, a childhood illness that can be almost restrained through vaccinations took life of one child and sickened four other children.

Nearly five children are diagnosed with a bacterial infection caused by bacteria named Haemophilus influenzae type b (HIB).

HIB mainly affects newborns and also children aged below 5 years. The vaccine for this bacterial infection can prevent child from bacterial meningitis, infection that affects brain and spinal cord, pneumonia and also epiglottis.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it has found that 3 of the affected children, including 7 months old who died with the rare illness, had not received any vaccinations at right time.

Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Disease at the CDC says, “Actually the situation is of concern for life.

Possibly, it could be happening else where around the world and it is really tragic that one innocent life is lost from a disease that is actually preventable. Parents may not realize the importance of the vaccination and the disease is still around”.

According to CDC, almost one in 20 HIB affected children dies and the survivors of the infection can possibly become deaf and nearly 10% to 30% can suffer with permanent brain damage.
